Blimey this one was a struggle. I don't think I've come so close to tearing a picture up so many times in a long while. If I hadn't been so happy with the original layout sketch this would probably have never seen the light of day as a painting but...I got there in the end.

So... before Santa Claus sold his soul to Coca-cola, before he only spent his year making toys for children, he was Father Winter or the Holly King, often pictured wearing green robes, carrying a light to those who were in darkness and food to those who were hungry, including the animals of the forest which is why I've painted him accompanied by a wolf and a hare.

The original is about A3 in size, painted mainly in watercolours with a smidge of acrylic and a little digital tweeking of the background, on hot-pressed 140lb paper.
